With characteristic charm and humour, Francois Gravel follows the lives of the Fillion children notably Louis and his brothers Philippe, Leo and Edouard from their start in a close-knit community on the east side of Montreal through the opportunities of bravel fifties and the changes that transformed Quebec in the sixties and seventies.

When their father loses his factory job because of the stock market crash ofthe Fillion brothers set out to earn money for the family by selling the scrap lumber they scavenge from the docks. A brief gang war with the Irish Catholics of the district destroys this venture and the brothers turn to making and selling furniture.

From there it’s a short and easy step to opening their own store, and they begin to build a successful business. Louis becomes the leader and a gifted, if reluctant, salesman; it’s his life the novel follows most closely as he marries, frabcois children, acquires his first car, and builds his dream home in one of the new developments on Montreal’s South Shore. Rarely does a novel capture the essence of an entire generation as well and in as entertaining a manner as does A Good Life.

The English-language version of Francois Gravel’s Fillion et freres is beautifully rendered by award-winning translator Sheila Fischman. He lives in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

It’s told by the offspring of the main character, and he could have been my dad. The experience of the depression, the war, the family loyalties took me back to so many experiences recounted by my mom and dad.

I especially found Louis’ way of looking at the world and his pride at running a successful business intriguing, as his words could have been spoken by my dad. Ggavel reading this book I’m convinced that my parents’ I loved this book, mostly because it paralleled my life on so many levels.

After reading this book I’m convinced that my grave perspecitives and experiences must have been common to their era, not just to their family. A Good Life is cleverly written and even though there is no plot to speak of, I couldn’t put it down.

Gravel’s characters are human and in spite of their faults they are basically cagoulf people with no deep and dark secrets. Like most of us I like to think.
